Israel has brought 'relentless death and destruction' to Gaza: UN chief
Israel's military campaign in Gaza has brought "relentless death and destruction" to Palestinians in the strip, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said. In a speech marking six months since Israel's war on Gaza began, the UN chief said that "nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people." Respect for international humanitarian law is in tatters," he added. "During my visit to the Rafah crossing 10 days ago, I met veteran humanitarians who told me categorically that the crisis and suffering in Gaza is unlike any they have ever seen," Guterres said, adding that long lines of trucks with aid continued to face "obstacle after obstacle". "When the gates to aid are closed, the doors to starvation are opened," he said. "More than half the population – over a million people – are facing catastrophic hunger.

Malicious use of AI could cause 'unimaginable' damage, says UN boss
Malicious use of artificial intelligence systems could cause a "horrific" amount of death and destruction, the UN secretary general has said, calling for a new UN body to tackle the threats posed by the technology. António Guterres said harmful use of AI for terrorist, criminal or state purposes could also cause "deep psychological damage", and he said AI-enabled cyber-attacks were already targeting UN peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. "The malicious use of AI systems for terrorist, criminal or state purposes could cause horrific levels of death and destruction, widespread trauma and deep psychological damage on an unimaginable scale," Guterres said. Speaking at the first UN security council session on AI, he said the advent of generative AI – the term for AI tools such as ChatGPT that produce convincing text, image and voice from human prompts – could be a defining moment for disinformation and hate speech and add a "new dimension" to the manipulation of human behaviour. Guterres called for the creation of a new UN entity along the lines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to tackle the risks.

Rutte said he visited "various place where the Russian army has left behind a horrific trail of death and destruction. I am deeply shocked by what I witnessed today". "These appalling crimes must not go unpunished. This is also the subject of the Ukraine Accountability Conference which will be held later this week in The Hague," Rutte said, adding that the conference is organised by the Dutch government, the International Criminal Court and the European Commission.

One Thing Covid Didn't Smash to Pieces? Monster Movies
By no means a thinking person's film, Godzilla vs. Kong nonetheless has moments of something like--what might be called--you could say--intelligence. Perhaps the smartest thing it did, for instance, was cast Kaylee Hottle in the part of Jia, a young girl who can talk to Kong. Both actress and character are deaf; when she first appears, the filmmakers pull off a nifty perspective shift by sucking out most of the sound. Later, we learn that Jia communicates with the big monkey the same way certain primate researchers interact with their subjects: in sign language. So not only does a deaf kid get to star in a major monster picture--it also makes effortless, plot-relevant sense to have her there.
